Small Businesses and Under-represented Discipline Recruitment

Historically, most employers at the MIT Career Fair have recruited for a relatively limited range of science and engineering jobs. Although MIT is best known for its strength in science and engineering, our students' professional interests are diverse and their academic backgrounds include the social sciences, policy, architecture, business, and numerous technical specialties. In recent years, students have expressed concern that disciplines are being underrepresented at the Career Fair. Others have asked that more start-ups be present at the Career Fair.

Therefore, there are special registration fees for start-ups and other employers interested in "underrepresented disciplines." These disciplines include, but are not limited to, those listed below. If you will be hiring primarily from one of these areas, or if you represent one of the employer types listed below, you may qualify for a discounted rate. Criteria for determining what constitutes a start-up will be based on one or more of the following criteria: (1) number of years the company has been in business (should be less than 5 years); (2) the number of employees; (3) the number of annual dollar revenues, as laid out by the Office of Size Standards of the Small Business Administration.

The Career Fair Executive Committee will decide whether your company qualifies as either a start-up or as an employer hiring primarily from a normally underrepresented discipline on a case-by-case basis. Please register as soon as possible, as there are a limited number of booths set aside for companies registering at a reduced rate. If you indicate that your company is one of these types, then the Career Fair Executive Committee will contact you about possible discount rates available specifically for your company. Please contact Kaustuv Debiswas, our Employer Relations Director for more information.
